Cooking the Meat Sauce

Step 1: Brown the Beef

First, I heat a large skillet over medium heat and then add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once the oil is hot enough, I add beef to the skillet and stir it for around 6-7 minutes until it turns brown.

Step 2: Add Tomato Sauce and Paste

After removing excess grease from the meat, I add 6 ounces tomato paste and stir it until well mixed. Then, I add two cans of 28 ounces prepared spaghetti sauce and stir it gently.

Step 3: Add Tomato Juice

Next, I pour 32 ounces tomato juice over the meat sauce, then add 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of black pepper before stirring again.

Step 4: Simmering

I let the mixture simmer on low heat for about an hour to let the flavors blend together nicely. Don’t forget to stir frequently to avoid burning.

Preparation of Lasagna

Step 5: Preheat Oven

I preheat my oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) while still preparing the lasagna.

Step 6: Prepare Baking Dish

Using a 9×13 inch baking dish, I spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom of the dish.

Step 7: Layering Lasagna Noodles

Layer three lasagna noodles on top of the meat sauce. If you’re using oven ready lasagna sheets, you can proceed with layering without cooking them first.

Step 8: Spreading Ingredients

Add around half of a mixture of 2 cups cottage cheese, 2 beaten eggs, and 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese on top of noodles as a second layer. Then sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese (about two cups).

Step 9: Adding Meat Sauce

Another layer of the meat sauce is added, covering the cheese completely.

Step 10: Repeat the layering

Repeatedly alternate layers of lasagna noodles, cheese mix, and meat sauce, ending with the cheese mix and meat sauce on top.

Step 11: Finishing Touches

Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake for about 25 minutes. After removing the foil, return everything to the oven and bake an extra 25 minutes.

Step 12: Resting

Once done, rest lasagna for around 15 minutes before serving. This will give time for everything to solidify and make it easier to cut into proper servings.

To make ahead, cook the lasagna a day or two before thou desire to serve it. Then, cover it with plastic wrap and tin foil before placing it in the refrigerator. Tips for Perfect Results

Verily, making a southern-style no boil lasagna requires patience and skill. Fear not, for I have gathered some helpful tips to ensure your dish turns out perfectly every time.

Firstly, it is important to use high-quality ingredients. You may be tempted to cut corners with lower quality ingredients, but this can greatly affect the end result. Opt for well-known brands of pasta and canned goods, fresh meats and cheeses, and farm-fresh eggs. Trust me my dear friends, it makes all the difference.

Secondly, when making the meat sauce for your lasagna, cook the ground beef fully until it is browned and crumbled. Drain any excess grease before adding in the tomato paste and sauce. This will ensure a hearty meat sauce that is not too greasy.

Another key tip is to make sure your lasagna noodles are evenly covered with cheese and sauce. While layering the noodles, spoon a generous amount of filling on each layer and spread it out evenly with the back of the spoon. This results in a consistently savory flavor throughout the dish.

When adding cottage cheese to your lasagna recipe, whisk in two beaten eggs along with grated Parmesan cheese. This creates a rich and creamy mixture that binds all of the layers together.

Lastly, allow your lasagna to cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set properly so you can avoid a runny mess when you slice into it.

By following these tips my dear friends, you will be sure to impress your family and guests with a delicious southern-style no boil lasagna every time!
